The acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is an amorphous thermoplastic polymer, made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. The most important properties of the ABS are impact strength and toughness.
The styrene monomer gives the ABS a good processability, the acrylonitrile the rigidity and the thermal and chemical resistance, while the butadiene makes the product more tenacious and resilient, even at low temperatures. By changing the proportions of the ABS components and adding specific additives, different grades can be produced, with particular properties. ABS has poor weather resistance and is therefore recommended for indoor applications. The acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene can be generally used between -20°C and +80°C (−4 and 176 °F). The ABS resists to aqueous acids, alkalis, concentrated hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, alcohols and animal, vegetable and mineral oils, but undergoes attack by concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids. ABS is also soluble in esters, ketones, 1,2-dichloroethane and acetone.
ABS qualitative properties: excellent dimensional stability, impact resistance, paintability, toughness, rigidity; it is a high gloss, amorphous, low moisture absorption product, which can be screwed with self-tapping screws.
