Polyamide 6 (PA 6) is a semicrystalline thermoplastic polymer (crystallinity up to 60%), composed of long chains containing amide units (N-H-C=O). PA 6 is obtained by polymerizing an acid with an amide.
Like all polyamides, it is one of the most used polymers within the technopolymer category. The molding cycles are short and, by using different kinds of reinforcements (such as glass or carbon fibers, glass spheres, mineral fillers such as kaolin, wollastonite or talc), it is possible to obtain grades with a wide distribution of physical, mechanical and thermal properties. Its resiliency can be improved by adding elastomers like EPDM or SBR.
Reinforced polyamides are characterized by a lower shrinkage than an unreinforced Polyamide 6. Obviously the shrinkage, beyond the molding parameters and the shape of the components, is linked to the thickness of the detail.
Because the PA 6 absorbs moisture quickly, it is necessary to check its drying before molding.
PA 6 can be mixed with ABS, PP with a specific compatibilizer or other polyamides such as PA 66 (to improve its appearance and thermal properties) or with PA 11 and PA 12 (to improve the impact resistance).
PA 6 qualitative properties: easy workability, melting point at 220°C, high impact resistance (especially on conditioned parts), good mechanical resistance even at low temperatures, high attenuation power, good electrical insulating capacity, good chemical resistance to organic and inorganic compounds (but poor in acids and humidity due to its hygroscopicity), good mechanical properties. It has a mild antistatic behavior which depends on the percentage of water absorbed. Intrinsically V2 according to UL94.
