Polyamide 66 (PA 66) is a semicrystalline-crystalline material which has one of the highest melting points among the commercially available polyamides; is obtained from the polymerization of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid and is part of the most important thermoplastic synthetic materials in the sector.
Unlike polyamide 6, it has greater rigidity, greater mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance with low friction coefficient, a good resistance to organic solvents, excellent dimensional stability and temperature resistance, but it has a lower impact resistance (being more crystalline, is therefore more fragile). PA 66 does not absorb moisture after molding, but retention is not as high as for PA 6. The absorption of humidity depends on the composition of the material, the thickness of the walls and the environmental conditions.
The amount of moisture absorption influences the dimensional stability and the properties and is thus something to be considered the design of the product.
The molding cycles are short and, through copolymerization and the filling of fibers, rubber or minerals, can be obtained grades with a wide distribution of physical-mechanical and thermal properties. The addition of elastomers, for example EPDM or SBR, improves resilience. PA 66 is resistant to most solvents, but not to oxidizing agents or strong acids.
PA 66 qualitative properties: good sliding and wear properties, high mechanical strength and toughness, excellent weldability and bendability, resistance to ignition, excellent dielectric properties, good abrasion resistance, exceptional chemical resistance, high oxygen barrier, resistance to oils and gasolines.
