Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic material and is highly resistant to dynamic stresses, abrasion and impact. It stands out for its high rigidity (tensile modulus from 1,700 to 17,000 Mpa) and the excellent resistance to thermal deformation; the continuous use temperature varies, depending on the type, from 120 to 140 ° C (briefly also from 160 to 170 °C). Thermal resistance can be improved by adding heat stabilizers or with mineral fillers or glass fiber reinforcements. Important, in particular for the automotive sector, is also the high resistance to chemical agents, for example fuels, alcohol, fats, oils, diluted acids and saline solutions.

PBT also has excellent electrical characteristics, such as good resistance to sliding currents and good dielectric rigidity; its less polar nature, compared to other polyesters, makes it less sensitive to the absorption of impurities, and this therefore allows it to show good electrical properties even when exposed to humidity at different temperatures. Therefore electrical / electronic elements are among its main applications.

The impact resistance increases with the molecular weight, also showing an excellent behavior under both static and dynamic load. Subjected to creep and fatigue tests, these polymers resist strong deformation for long periods of time, even under high stress.

PBT qualitative properties: good chemical resistance, excellent rigidity and hardness, high wear resistance, resistance to solvents, high resistance to continuous operating temperatures, excellent resistance to yielding even at high temperatures, great rigidity, good friction properties, abrasion resistance, high dimensional stability, good resistance to atmospheric agents, absence of cracks due to environmental stress.

Applications:

  • Automotive;
  • Electrical and electronic items;
  • Household goods;
  • Builiding.
