Polycarbonate (PC) is an amorphous thermoplastic polymer, obtained by carbonic acid, and is intrinsically one of the most transparent polymers. At the same time, it can lend itself to the formation of compounds in different colors, transparent, opaque and covering. The aesthetics of polycarbonate reaches its highest levels in the range of engineering polymers.
The weight of the PC molecular chain can be defined during polymerization, in order to give the polycarbonate different fluidity indices (MFR or MFI). The fluidity level of the PC typically varies between 3 and 80 g / 10 m.in
Polycarbonate can be produced with many different characteristics, including: flame retardant (according to a new technology compliant with environmental requirements), scratch resistant, high toughness, heat resistant, weather resistant, biocompatible, optical quality and compliant with the strict requirements FDA and USP.
Moreover, the PC has an excellent UV stability, which can be further improved with the addition of stabilizers. Other additives that can be used to improve polycarbonate performance are those that increase heat resistance and stress cracking resistance (ESCR). The PC can finally be filled with glass fiber to further increase its rigidity.
PC qualitative properties: great resistance to impact and fractures, high heat resistance, sterilisability, good dimensional stability, good electrical insulation properties, excellent workability, optical transparency, high refractive index (1,584), excellent fire resistance.
Applications:
