Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is an extremely transparent thermoplastic polymer, obtained by polymerization of the methyl methacrylate monomer. Chemically it is the polymer of methyl methacrylate and for this reason it is sometimes called acrylic glass. Due to its transparency, its aesthetics and its resistance to scratches, PMMA can be considered the light alternative to glass and can be used in place of polycarbonate (PC), when characteristics of high transparency, resistance to UV rays and / or scratch resistance are fundamental for the required application (but not high impact properties). In common language, the term methacrylate generally refers to this polymer. It behaves similarly to optical fiber in terms of quality of transparency, and the PMMA property of being more or less unbreakable depends on its "mix".

PMMA qualitative properties: outstanding optical properties, transparency and surface brilliance, rigidity, relative fragility, abrasion resistance; stable if exposed to UV rays, highly flammable, sensitive to internal tensions with possible formation of cracks; resistance to gamma ray sterilization, suitability for food contact.

Applications:

  • Automotive;
  • Lighting;
  • Cosmetic industry;
  • Medical;
  • Builiding.
